Questa settimana per l’intervista abbiamo il piacere di ospitare Bev White, Allevatrice di Smooth Collie (Maneric) oltre che Giudice Inglese di Rough Collie e Smooth Collie, ha giudicato in tutto il mondo oltre che essere stata un Giudice del Crufts
1) Tell us about you, how long have you had and breed Smooth Collie?
I had my first Smooth Collie in 1985 and have had them ever since. Her name was Foxearth French Lace at Maneric.
2) What are, according to you, the most important points in the Smooth Collie standard?
The whole standard is important – especially the first part General Appearance: ” Appears as gifted with intelligence, alertness and activity. Stands with dignity governed by perfect anatomical formation, with no part out of proportion, giving appearance of working capability.” To me as a judge this is what I hope to see when I see Smooth Collies in the show ring. There is nothing more beautiful than a correctly built and proportioned Smooth Collie. Some sections of the breed standard are longer and more detailed than others and this gives an indication of what is thought to be the most important. However, a beautiful head is no good on a dog with poor angulation. And similarly, a beautifully made and moving dog might as well be any other breed if it does not have a typical Smooth Collie head.
3) What are the qualities you look for when breeding?
I have not bred very many litters but as a breeder I would say correct Breed type is most important followed by sound temperament.
4) You need to choose a puppy to keep, what do you look for when you make this choice?
When choosing a puppy, I study the whole litter playing together and see which one catches my eye. This is usually the one with correct balance. I then hope that this puppy also has a good head.
5) When mateing your bitches, what are you looking for in the future stud?
When mating a bitch, first be honest about what you want to improve, then look for a dog who excels in those points. Breed to type so that your litter is even. If making an outcross mating, choose a dog with a similar phenotype. Always undertake health tests on your breeding stock – clinical tests and DNA tests BUT if the test results are not perfect, do not dismiss the dog or bitch from your breeding programme. Health tests are a tool to inform your breeding programme. Always plan for the future – breeding is like a road map, you need to have a destination in mind. It might take you 10 years to get there – you have to be determined, patient and ALWAYS try and keep a puppy that is better than its mother.
6) In your opinion what is the current situation with the breed in UK and Overseas?
In the UK I think the breed is in an OK place. Not a great place – just ok. Numbers of Smooth Collies in the show ring are small so it is easy to win with inferior dogs. Judges do not understand what a quality Smooth Collie looks like so they reward inferior dogs. Other people see them winning and think they must therefore be good examples of the breed. In the UK many of our best breeders have retired. Younger breeders are few in number, they have their own ideas about what they want to achieve (which is good – we all wanted to change the world at one time!) but they are losing Breed type in my opinion. Too much focus solely on health testing and diversity.
In overseas countries, I think generally breeders need to think about substance in the breed. Some Smooth Collies look like greyhounds. To be able to perform his task, the Smooth Collie needs substance; he must be elegant, not coarse but he must have a good chest and ribs. I also think that round, light eyes are a problem. The Smooth Collie must have almond shaped, dark brown eyes. Also try and breed for a clear silvery blue Merle. Not easy I know – the hardest colour to get right. Study which lines give the best colour (it’s not hard!) and line breed to those lines.
7) Do you reckon there are particular problems in the breed that you feel should be kept at close sight?
Apart from losing Breed type, I would say always pay attention to body proportions and balance. You must breed for correct front and rear angulation. If you lose it it will be so hard to get it back. Also ensure that your Collies are slightly longer than they are tall. If you get these things right, your Collies will move like a true working dog.
Which are the show results you are most proud of, and your most precious memories?
I have many wonderful showing memories thanks to some beautiful dogs. Best in Show wins at the British Collie Club Championship Show with Ch Foxearth Flourish and Ch Foxearth Frappuccino; 4 times Best of Breed at Crufts with Flourish. I am so lucky to be asked to judge my heart breed in the UK and overseas. Memorable appointments include Crufts, Club shows, Australia, Finland. I could go on. I never forget how privileged I am and how many friends I have made thanks to this wonderful breed.
9) What advise would you give to a newcomer to the breed who would like to buy a puppy? And to the newcomer who would like to start breeding?
To a newcomer wanting to buy a puppy I would say do your homework and buy from a breeder who has the breed truly at heart. Enjoy your puppy and include him or her in all your family activities for Smooth Collies are fantastic family dogs. To someone wanting to breed I would say do not do this without being mentored by successful breeders. Buy the best bitch you can and mate her to the best dog you can find. Be strict in what you keep so that your breeding programme starts out in the best possible way.
10) Which are the major faults you see today in the breed?
Major faults in my opinion include incorrect front angulation, lack of substance and bad temperament.

1) Parlaci di te, da quanto tempo hai avuto e allevato Smooth Collie?
Ho avuto il mio primo Smooth Collie nel 1985 e li ho sempre avuti da allora. Il primo Smooth si chiamava Foxearth French Lace at Maneric.
2) Quali sono, secondo te, i punti più importanti dello standard dello Smooth Collie?
L’intero standard è importante, in particolare la prima parte Aspetto generale: ” Appare come dotato di intelligenza, vigile e attivo. La sua dignità è governata da una perfetta formazione anatomica, senza alcuna parte sproporzionata, dando l’aspetto di capacità al lavoro. Non c’è niente di più bello di uno Smooth Collie correttamente costruito e proporzionato. Alcune sezioni dello standard di razza sono più lunghe e più dettagliate di altre e questo è per dare n’indicazione di ciò che è più importante. Tuttavia, una bella testa non è buona su un cane con scarsa angolazione. E allo stesso modo, un cane ben fatto e in giusto movimento potrebbe anche essere qualsiasi altra razza se non ha una tipica testa da Smooth Collie.
3) Quali sono le qualità che cerchi durante la riproduzione?
Non ho avuto molte cucciolate, ma come allevatore direi che il tipo di Razza corretto è più importante seguito dal temperamento sano.
4) Devi scegliere un cucciolo da tenere, cosa cerchi quando fai questa scelta?
Quando scelgo un cucciolo, studio tutta la cucciolata giocandoci insieme e vedo quale di questi cattura la mia attenzione. Questo è di solito quello con il giusto equilibrio. Spero che questo cucciolo abbia anche una buona testa.
5) Quando accoppi le tue femmine, cosa stai cercando nel futuro stallone?
Quando si accoppia una femmina, prima di tutto bisogna essere onesti su ciò che si vuole migliorare, quindi cercare uno stallone che eccelle in quei punti. Allevare in tipo in modo che la vostra cucciolata sia uniforme. Se si effettua un accoppiamento in outcross, scegliere un cane con un fenotipo simile. Effettua sempre i test sanitari nel tuo allevamento – test clinici e test del DNA, MA se i risultati dei test non sono perfetti, non respingere lo stallone o la fattrice dal tuo programma di allevamento. I test sanitari sono uno strumento per informare il vostro programma di allevamento. Pianifica sempre il futuro – l’allevamento è come una tabella di marcia, è necessario avere una destinazione in mente. Potrebbero volerci 10 anni per arrivarci – devi essere determinato, paziente e SEMPRE cercare di tenere un cucciolo che è meglio di sua madre.
6) Secondo te qual è la situazione attuale della razza nel Regno Unito ed all’estero?
Nel Regno Unito penso che la razza è in una buona posizione. Non è un ottima posizione – appena ok. I numeri di Smooth Collies nelle Esposizioni sono piccoli, quindi è facile vincere con cani inferiori. I giudici non capiscono come appare uno Smooth Collie di qualità e premiano i cani inferiori. Le persone li vedono vincere e pensano che devono quindi essere buoni esempi della razza. Nel Regno Unito molti dei nostri migliori allevatori si sono ritirati. Gli allevatori più giovani sono pochi in numero, hanno le loro idee su ciò che vogliono raggiungere (che è buono – tutti abbiamo voluto cambiare il mondo in una sola volta!) ma stanno perdendo il tipo di razza, a mio parere. Si concentrano troppo esclusivamente sui test di salute e sulla diversità.
Nei paesi d’oltremare, penso che in generale gli allevatori abbiano bisogno di pensare alla sostanza nella razza. Alcuni Smooth Collie sembrano levrieri. Per essere in grado di svolgere il loro compito, lo Smooth Collie ha bisogno di sostanza; deve essere elegante, non grossolano, ma deve avere un buon petto e costato. Penso anche che gli occhi rotondi e chiari siano un problema. Lo Smooth Collie deve avere occhi marroni scuri a forma di mandorla. Prova anche ad allevare per un blue merle argenteo. Non è facile, lo so – è il colore più difficile da ottenere. Studia quali linee danno il miglior colore (non è difficile!) e la linea si riproduce da quelle linee.
7) Ritieni che ci siano problemi particolari nella razza che ritieni debbano essere tenuti a vista?
Oltre a perdere ila tipologia della razza, direi sempre prestare attenzione alle proporzioni del corpo e all’equilibrio. È necessario allevare per una corretta angolazione anteriore e posteriore. Se la perdi sarà così difficile riaverla. Assicurati inoltre che i Collie siano leggermente più lunghi che alti. Se si ottiene queste cose giuste, lo Smooth si muoverà come un vero cane da lavoro.
Quali sono i risultati degli show di cui sei più orgoglioso e i tuoi ricordi più preziosi?
Ho molti ricordi meravigliosi di show grazie ad alcuni bellissimi cani. Il migliore Show è stato quello vinto al British Collie Club Championship Show con Ch Foxearth Flourish e Ch Foxearth Frappuccino; 4 volte Best of Breed al Crufts con Flourish. Sono così fortunata che mi venga chiesto di giudicare la mia razza del cuore nel Regno Unito ed all’estero. Gli appuntamenti memorabili includono Crufts, Club Shows, Australia, Finlandia. Potrei andare avanti. Non dimentico mai quanto sono privilegiata e quanti amici ho fatto grazie a questa meravigliosa razza.
9) Che consiglio daresti ad un neofita della razza che vorrebbe comprare un cucciolo? E per il neofita che vorrebbe iniziare l’allevamento?
Ad un neofita che vuole comprare un cucciolo direi di studiare e comprare da un allevatore che ha la razza veramente a cuore. Godetevi il vostro cucciolo e includetelo in tutte le vostre attività familiari, gli Smooth Collies sono fantastici cani di famiglia. A chiunque voglia allevare direi di non farlo senza essere guidati da allevatori di successo. Comprare la fattrice migliore che si può ed accoppiarla al miglior stallone che si può trovare. Sii rigoroso in ciò che fai in modo che il tuo programma di allevamento inizi nella migliore maniera possibile.
10) Quali sono i principali difetti che vedi oggi nella razza?
I principali difetti a mio parere includono l’angolazione frontale errata, la mancanza di sostanza ed il cattivo temperamento.
